Hamilton Zoo: A Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand
Providing shelter to more than 600 native and exotic animals, the Hamilton Zoo occupies a total area of 25 hectares and is nestled amidst a serene environment. Located on Brymer Road, Hamilton, this distinctive New Zealand zoo is an impressive sanctuary for wildlife. Approximately 2 hours around the zoo and visitors will discover many diverse species of native birds, reptiles, and mammals.
Started in 1969, the zoo was originally called Hilldale Game Farm. Previously owned by Mr. and Mrs. Powell, the site was later managed by the Hamilton City Council. However, for several years the zoo was not in good condition and as a result was forced to close until the Zoo Education Center was established in 1987. With this establishment many new steps were taken to improve the zoo facilities, create new exhibits and pathways and even start extensive plantings. Hamilton Zoo’s first zoo director was appointed in 1989. Today, the zoo employs more than 25 people who are dedicated to animal welfare and provide comprehensive visitor service.
Hamilton Zoo boasts the largest avian walk in Australasia known as the FreeFlight Sanctuary, complete with native plants and birds. Identified as the most notable feature of the zoo, this sanctuary occupies an area of more than 3,800 square meters and provides birds with more than 20 million liters of air space. It is built with ponds, fern-covered valleys and waterfalls that provide birds with a comfortable natural environment. Some native birds that can be spotted here include the Blue Duck -Whio, New Zealand Kingfisher -kotare, Ringed Rail -Riro Riro and New Zealand Wood Pigeon -Kereru.
In addition to the vibrant birds and plants, the Hamilton Zoo is a great place to explore the lives of many different types of reptiles and mammals, including kangaroos, ring-tailed lemurs, giraffes, African cheetahs, red pandas, zebras, tongue lizards, blue and much more. Some of the rare animals, such as the white rhinoceros, can also be seen here at the Hamilton Zoo. The zoo plays an important role in protecting and preserving the threatened and endangered animals of both its homeland and the world. In this regard, the zoo works closely with many international conservation programs.
