What Does the Bill Cover When Renting Student Accommodation?

Bill Cover When Renting Student Accommodation

When renting student accommodation, it’s important to be aware of what bills are included in the rent. The contract you sign will detail how much the rent is, when it should be paid and which utility bills are included within the cost of your accommodation. Here at Let Pads, we offer a ‘Bills Included’ package for all our properties which includes Gas, Electricity, Water Rates and Sewage. There are some landlords who will add Television packages or Netflix to their bills inclusive properties but these extras aren’t a necessity and you can find the same services at a cheaper price elsewhere.

It is also important to remember that you will be responsible for insuring your own personal possessions so it’s worth looking into student contents insurance, a number of companies can be found online who offer competitive prices for students. If you do choose to buy an insurance policy it is a good idea to make sure the landlord is aware of the policy and has a copy of the policy to hand in case any problems occur during your stay.

If you are not satisfied with your accommodation or the landlord has not responded to any complaints or issues raised by you, it is a good idea to contact Lancashire student accommodation Services and/or the Students’ Union who can help resolve the issue. If you are unable to resolve the problem with the landlord it is recommended that you take further action and contact the Dispute Resolution Centre at Preston City Council.

Regardless of the type of property you choose, it is important to always view the property before signing a contract. This is a legally binding document and you should never sign it until you are 100% sure that the property meets your requirements. If you have any doubts, it is a good idea to ask a friend or colleague to check over the contract and help ensure that it’s something you want to commit to.

Community engagement is further facilitated through organized events, workshops, and activities within the accommodation. These initiatives provide opportunities for students to connect, share experiences, and develop social and leadership skills. The sense of community fostered by quality student accommodation contributes to a more holistic and enriching college experience, enabling students to form lasting friendships and networks that extend beyond the walls of their living space.

Many landlords will require a deposit at the beginning of your tenancy to protect against damage beyond normal wear and tear or unpaid rent. This deposit is typically equal to five weeks’ rent but it’s worth checking with each individual landlord to see how much they are charging.
