The best tips to keep pests away

As the weather gets warmer in the UK we may start to see more and more flies, bugs and insects, some big and some small. Unfortunately, these pesky creatures can start working their way inside if the environment is right for them. By following these simple steps, you will keep pests away from your home.

First, a dirty house is more likely to attract pests. Be sure to clean the bin regularly and clean up food and drink spills soon after they happen. Bugs don’t mind eating off the ground! The more food mess left, the more likely ants and flies will appear.

Keep all food or drinks, especially sugary or carbohydrate foods/drinks, sealed and out of sight. This not only keeps them cool for you, but also prevents wasps and ants from being tempted into your home. Ants especially love sugary drinks like cola and foods like jams.

If you have areas in your home that are prone to moisture, be sure to keep a close eye on them as it warms up. Moisture can breed mold, which in turn will attract critters. You can buy a range of damp products, including damp wallpaper, which will help fix the problem, or alternatively contact an expert if you’re really concerned.

Citronella-containing products are a great, harmless way to keep pests away. Candles are great for the summer when you are sitting in the garden to keep those pesky mosquitoes away.

For larger pests like rats and mice, again make sure you don’t leave food lying around and even make sure garbage bags aren’t left exposed for too long. Also see how they are getting into your house, look for holes and cracks they might be getting in through. Once you’ve identified their route, you can seal it to prevent them from coming back.

By following these few tips, you should be better able to keep pests out of your home. If you do find yourself with a fly or insect infestation, contact a pest control expert rather than address the problem yourself. This is especially true if you are not sure of the type of pest. Your pest control expert will be able to advise you on the best way to tackle your problem, whether you want to fix it yourself or hire the company to do it for you.
