Skip Shoulder Rotator Cuff Surgery

Shoulder rotator cuff surgery may be necessary for a number of reasons. Whether it is an open or arthroscopic surgical procedure, invasive measures are generally required when:

  • A cuff tear is extensive: long tears almost always require surgical intervention to remedy. The extent of the surgical procedure will largely depend on the severity of the tear.
  • Frozen shoulder is serious: If the loss of range of motion is great and no other steps work, shoulder surgery may be required to correct the problem.

  • Using gentle, guided movements: Physical therapy is often one of the best ways to rebuild a shoulder and avoid the need for surgery altogether. In the case of a frozen shoulder, physical therapy can help break up the jam in the shoulder and restore range of motion. For tears, physical therapy is often required to help keep range of motion intact and regain some strength after an injury.
  • Taking the correct medications: Cortisone is often recommended to treat frozen shoulder problems. Sometimes it can help resolve the problem and prevent the need for shoulder rotator cuff surgery. Anti-inflammatory medications that keep swelling out of the area are also often required in both conditions.
  • Exercise patience: If you’re dealing with a minor cuff tear or a frozen shoulder, patience may be the last thing you want to exercise. Although surgery seems like a quick fix, it isn’t either. For non-surgical interventions to work, time and diligence are often required. However, under the right circumstances, following it can help you skip rotator surgery altogether.
