Portland Maine Hostels

Portland, Maine by Casco Bay, is a city where the past and the present coexist. Portland is the largest city and commercial center in Maine. Its annual tourism business exceeds 3.5 million. The reason is simple. Amidst commercial activities, the city has a wonderful cultural flavor that includes a symphony orchestra, ballet, theater, and art museums.

The Maritime Signal Tower at the Portland Observatory is perhaps the last of its kind in the United States. There are also breweries that produce English and Belgian beers.

The fully restored 19th century old port is an exciting shopping area. The Western Promenade has a series of impressive Victorian houses and the beaches are beautiful.

Outdoor activities include swimming, hiking, biking, bird watching, boating, and canoeing. One can go out in boats to transport live lobsters, and there are also cruises to watch whales and seals. In winter, skiing is very popular and it’s not far from Portland.

Excellent bed and breakfast facilities include 18th and 19th century houses set on extensive grounds. There are places listed on the Select Registry and they are approved National Historic Landmarks. An inn has been operating for over 100 years.

Many inns offer complimentary European chocolates and cordials, homemade scones for early risers, refrigerators with free soft drinks, and 24-hour pantries. Breakfasts are solid and tasty. Office facilities are available in some of the locations. Many offer free parking and free local calls. Some stock sports equipment such as bicycles, canoes, and kayaks. They may also have large movie libraries and collections of books and games.

Rates range from $ 35 during the off-season upwards, depending on the location and amenities offered. Many offer air conditioning. Check out the rules on children and pets, smoking, advances, cancellation fees, taxes, accepted credit cards and house rules.
