Charlie’s books are tremendous "Tremendous" Jones – Book Review

Title and author: The books are tremendous by Charlie “Tremendous” Jones

Contents synopsis:

The late Charlie “Tremendous” Jones was a lover of books and dedicated himself to self-improvement and self-education through reading and study.

Jones was born in Alabama and raised in Pennsylvania. He was a super seller and publisher. He also kept a grueling conference schedule for nearly 50 years.

Jones founded and ran Executive Books, his publisher. Through this company he sold and gave away thousands of books during the last half century. Most of the books he sold were self-improvement books in sales, leadership, personal development, etc. Many of them are small paperbacks, sold cheaply, but containing many jewels of wisdom and knowledge from many sources, new and old.

Among the best known of his little books is this one, The books are tremendous. In this book, Jones compiles a series of essays and quotes from JC Penney, John Henry Newman, Oswald Chambers, Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Orison S. Marden, Joseph Addison, Abigail Van Buren, Henry Ward Beecher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman , William Shakespeare, CS Lewis, and many other educators, speakers, authors, industry captains, and book lovers, famous and unknown.

These 64 pages include concise ideas from academics and leaders over the past 200 years that illustrate the value of reading and studying. If you have any doubts about the value of self-improvement and reading this little book, you will overcome them. If you love books as much as Charlie Jones, you will enjoy this journey with so many fellow bibliophiles.

Readability / Writing quality:

This book is very easy to read. Most essays are no more than a page or two. You can sit down and read the entire book in an hour or bite into small pieces over time, either way it is enjoyable and instructive.

Notes on the author:

As noted above, the late Charlie Jones was an avid book promoter, editor, and speaker. His books remain for sale both new and used. He continues to be a huge influence on millions of people who have heard him speak and read his work. Jones was a self-made man who found tremendous success with books and selling them. He possessed boundless enthusiasm that made him a formidable salesman and a great public speaker. Although it has passed, his daughter continues with her work.

Three great ideas you can use:

1. What to read: all great literature, fiction and nonfiction, that seek to uplift, inspire, educate and empower. Jones defended reading good books and edifying work and denounced what he called “junk” books.

2. How you will read: find your best method for reading and studying. Read with a purpose. Study what you read, rather than just reading it. Take note. Check. Reread when you need to and go back to what you have read in the past. Jones was an avid reader and encouraged others to do the same.

3. Read profitably: Remember the elements of intention, attention and retention. Read with this in mind. What is your intention when reading? pay attention to what you are reading and try to retain it for the future. This is how you will learn from your reading.
